Nurse subjected to disciplinary proceedings for suggesting a male patient should be referred to as he

I have been subjected to disciplinary proceedings and have been given a written warning because I said, during a clinical discussion, that we should refer to a male patient as ‘he’ because he was taking oestrogen and it may affect him differently to a female. I had seen a number of articles stating that this hormone may cause problems with executive function in males. We were going to do a mental health assessment on this young man. I raised the issue because we would have to ask a lot of questions and would be giving a lot of complex information. I felt that we should be aware of this to ensure that he understood and could process the information. I also thought that we should be clear that he was male and take into account the higher risk of completed suicide in males. I believe that I was advocating for this patient. My colleague submitted a complaint. The process was very traumatic for me. I have been a mental health nurse for 30 years.
